SWOT Analysis, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, is a strategic planning tool that helps organizations assess both internal and external factors. It is a comprehensive framework that allows companies to identify their internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. By analyzing these factors, organizations can develop strategies that leverage their strengths and opportunities while mitigating their weaknesses and threats.

We are sure that the way to go is to increase the level of expertise and information of the European Surgeons that embrace the field of Foot and Ankle Surgery. This effort must be more effective on young surgeons, because it’s obvious that the future is on their hands. Also, we need that young surgeons feel that EFAS is a place for improvement and exchange of expertise and knowledge.

GloFAS real-time forecasts

A number of layers are publicly available, but the real-time forecasts can only be accessed by registered users. A complete logbook of surgical cases shall be required preferably electronically for ratification by the examination board before proceeding to the examination. In GloFAS, snow depth water equivalent in each grid box is calculated from three elevation-related bands to account for the difference in the melting rate with snow condition (see Auxiliary Data for more details). However, only the more directly usable composite snow map representing the total snow water equivalent for each grid box is made available.

Education Committee

EFAS is pleased to present its first podcast for the EFAS Journal Club organized by the Youth Committee. For this episode, Dr. Alessio Bernasconi (Italy) invited Prof. Bedri Karaismailoglu (Turkey) and Dr. Sandeep Patel (India) to discuss their papers about posterior malleolus fractures and their management. These would include Basic Instructional Courses, Cadaver Courses or the Annual Meeting/Advanced Instructional Course. As the examination shall precede the latter subsequent attendance at this meeting may be considered appropriate in occasional circumstances.

Soil wetness index (root zone) represents the volume of water stored in the soil layers given as an instantaneous value at the end of each model time step. Soil Depth is a static file that gives a set of three values – depth from the surface to the bottom of each layer. Soil depth is a positive value downward for each of the three soil layers at each grid point. The value is relative from the top of the land surface to the bottom of each layer respectively (i.e the soil depth for layer 1 goes to 50 mm and the soil depth for layer 2 goes to 1400 mm, and so on). It provides complementary, added-value information (e.g. probabilistic, medium range flood forecasts, flash flood indicators or impact forecasts) to the relevant national and regional authorities. Furthermore, EFAS keeps the  Emergency Response Coordination Centre  (ERCC) informed about ongoing and possibly upcoming flood events across Europe. Some water from rainfall, melting snow, or deep in the soil, stays stored in the soil. Otherwise, the water drains away, either over the surface (surface runoff), or under the ground (sub-surface runoff) and the sum of these two is simply called ‘runoff’. This parameter is the total amount of water accumulated over a particular time period which depends on the data extracted.The units of runoff are depth in metres. This is the depth the water would have if it were spread evenly over the grid box.

The list of nominees shall be presented to the Voting and Non-Voting Representatives of all members at least one month prior to the General Assembly for election every odd year. In addition to the names prepared by the search committee, the final ballot can include names which have been agreed upon by the representatives of at least three member national societies. Proposals received at the EFAS Secretary-General will be mailed to all representatives. Email voting by non-attending Voting Representatives or written transfer of voting rights to a Non-Voting Representative is allowed. Email votes should be received at the EFAS Secretary-General 24h before the GA. When votes are tied, the Board members will make the final decision during the General Assembly.

European Flood Awareness System data

EFAS Council and the Certification Board have agreed that it would be appropriate to consider awarding an Honorary Certificate to European Foot and Ankle Surgeons of merit. This shall be drawn from the previous list of Executive and Council Members who were democratically elected and who have been active in EFAS and its committees. Once a candidate has been accepted for examination the following process will occur, preceding the biennial meeting or advanced instructional course.

The volume of water over the total volume of voids in the soil, expressed as an index with values between 0 (residual soil moisture) and 1 (saturation), representing the lower and upper soil moisture limits of the root zone. The root zone is the maximum depth at which plants can extract water from the soil. Voids are empty spaces in the soil column that can be filled with water or air. Volume rate of water flow, including sediments, chemical and biological material, in the river channel averaged over a time step through a cross-section.

We do not recommend to use EFAS for catchments below 50 km2, most of our products/layers use 150 km2 as a threshold (i.e. we do not evaluate the model skill/performance in catchments smaller than 150 km2). EFAS variables (called ‘parameters’ in ECMWF MARS) are the hydrological entities calculated by the modelling chain. EFA Annual Meeting and Calendar

The Board shall be responsible for managing the affairs of EFAS according to the general policy decided by the Committee of Representatives, and take initiatives to promote audiology in Europe. PublicationsEvidence of at least two international publications in appropriate Journals on Foot and Ankle Surgical topics shall be required. Preference shall be given to those publishing in the Journal of the European Foot and Ankle Society. Some technical issues are impacting the SOS data server with no EFAS5 forecasts available. A bug was identified introducing errors in the initial conditions of all EFAS v5 forecasts since its operational launch on 20 September 2023. The error also impacted all reforecasts and the historical simulation from 01 January 2023. On the other hand, being confronted with different experiences and reality might be in lighting. With this in mind, EFAS has developed for several years a program of travelling fellowships which has been a success and that we intend to expand as soon as the epidemic situation permits. In addition, we are starting, conditioned buy the sanitary situation, a project for Research Fellowships where the Fellow will spend some months on a select Research Centre and develop a project on the Foot and Ankle field. GloFAS reforecasts

The EFAS Matrix primarily focuses on external factors such as opportunities and threats, while the SWOT Analysis considers both internal factors (strengths and weaknesses) and external factors. Additionally, the EFAS Matrix assigns weights to each external factor based on their importance, while the SWOT Analysis does not. Overall, both tools are valuable in helping organizations identify key strategic issues and develop effective strategies to address them.

Users will have different access levels, ensuring that staff at various levels can see the information that is relevant to them. EFACS E/8 reduces the time spent on small tasks, such as sending confirmation of orders, by linking up processes and automating them. It will ensure that if one task is completed, then the next step will be automatically done.

EFAS want to create a set up making it possible for one surgeon (visitor) to visit another surgeon (host). The visitor might want to gain experience in general foot and ankle surgery, if the visitor is young or less experienced. In other cases, the visitor might want to gain experience in highly specialized procedures in a high volume center with experienced surgeons. Each member should pay to its national society and a single payment will be made to EFAS by the National society. Each National Society is responsible for the verification of its members and trainees.

GFM data can be accessed via the EFAS or GloFAS map viewer or using the GFM data portal. Supervised by the experienced EFAS faculty, participants of the courses will practice their techniques on cadavers. If you are a foot and ankle surgeon residing and working in a European country where there is an EFAS-affiliated National Society, you can automatically become an EFAS member by joining this national society. Once your national membership is approved, the secretary of the society will report your profile to EFAS, activating your EFAS Affiliated National Society Membership. Such a working group shall have an appointed convener and a well defined mandate, and shall report results to the General Assembly. ELECTIONS, NOMINATIONSA search committee of three people, appointed by the General Assembly, shall call for nominations to the offices of Vice Chairperson, Secretary-General and Treasurer of the Board, and two auditors, and draw up a list of nominees.

Events EFAS Calendar 2025

Criteria for membership shall be determined by the council as advised by the Membership Committee. The basic criterion will be to satisfy the Council of Management that the applying Non-European Society fulfils the function of being a National Society of predominantly Orthopaedic Surgeons dedicated to the advancement of Foot & Ankle Surgery within their own country. Membership of a Non-European Society accepted for affiliation with EFAS will convey global membership of EFAS to all Individuals of the Affiliated National Society and entitle them to receive the journal of the Society. They can work in the Committees but cannot vote in the General Assembly and cannot be elected to join the Council.

• This type of membership is for individual European orthopaedic and trauma surgeons with strong interest in foot and ankle surgery residing in a country where there is no EFAS-affiliated National Society.

The emphasis is on clinical examination cases, discussion groups and typical day-to-day clinic scenarios. Although not an exam preparation course, content is taught to the standard expected in the FRCS(Tr & Orth) exam; that of a day-one non-specialist orthopaedic consultant.

In 2018, GloFAS, originally developed by ECMWF in collaboration with the JRC and the University of Reading, became fully operational after being a prototype service since 2011. BOARDThe Board shall consist of the Chairperson, the Vice Chairperson, the Past Chairperson, the Secretary-General and the Treasurer, elected from the members of the Committee of Representatives. The Vice Chairperson shall normally succeed to the office of Chairperson for a two year period and thereafter to the office of Past Chairperson for a two year term. The Board may co-opt additional members, without voting rights, for specific purposes, e.g. in relation to European Conferences on Audiology, or to help liaise with other organizations.

Through this collaborative approach, we can share knowledge, respect our differences and work towards unified goals in hearing healthcare. Education is the foundation for strong academic and clinical excellence in audiology. One of the visions for EFAS during my presidency is to enhance the visibility and understanding of the structure of audiology education across various universities in Europe. We must also foster interdisciplinary education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to better reflect the real-world complexities of hearing care. EFAS is committed to supporting this vision by working closely with the national representatives of EFAS and academic institutions worldwide. The field of audiology is not just about diagnosing and treating hearing loss—it is a multidisciplinary field about restoring human connection, enabling communication and promoting inclusion in a society.
